Introduction to 8085

1)What is a microprocessor?
A microprocessor is a semiconductor chip or a chip set those implements the central processor of a computer. It is the heart of a microcomputer.
A microprocessor has three basic units and everything resides within these three units, they are:-

  1.   Arithmetic and Logic unit(ALU)
  2.   Control Unit(CU)
  3.   Memory unit
All these forms a CPU built into a single chip is called a microprocessor.
The microprocessor is a programmable logic device designed with flip-flops,registers and timing elements.A microprocessor has a set of instructions designed internally to manipulate data and communicate with peripheral.

  • *ALU:-An ALU is a digital circuit used to perform arithmetic and logic operations.

  • *CU:-The control unit (CU) is a component of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) that directs operation of the processor. It tells the computer's memory, arithmetic/logic unit and input and output devices how to respond to a program's instructions

FUNCTION'S OF A MICROPROCESSOR
  1. to fetch, decode and execute instructions.
  2. movement/transfer of data to and from memory location to microprocessor and vice versa
  3. provide timing and control signal
  4. give response to interrupts

2)What are its application in general life?
There are a lot of applications of Microprocessor in general life. For EG:-Mobile phones, Laptops, computer, modems, cd player, multimeter, traffic control, etc. All of these gadgets have a microprocessor installed somewhere for its smart performance.

3)8085 microprocessor and its features.
The Intel 8085 ("eighty-eighty-five") is an 8-bit microprocessor produced by Intel and introduced in 1976.
It's features are:-
  • It is an 8 bit microprocessor (each character is represented by 8 bits or a byte).
  • It is capable of addressing 64-of memory and 256 I/O devices.
  • It has 16-bit address lines.
  • It provides 5 level interrupts and supports external interrupt request.
  • A 16 bit program counters (PC).
  • A 16 bit stack pointer (SP).
  • It is enclosed with 40 pins DIP (Dual in line package).
  • It requires a signal +5V power supply
  • It operates at 3.2 MHZ single phase clock with maximum clock frequency 6 MHz and minimum clock frequency 500 kHz.
  • It consists of 74 instruction sets.
